“Creepin’ into fall"
(9/1/2010 - by Bob Misak)
This past weekend the weather was great and so was the fishing, as boats were able to get outside and we had low humidity and cooler weather for most of the week. The fluke fishing was very satisfactory according to most anglers I ran into, and Herland Cornelius got outside and caught a bunch of keeper fluke in 35 to 40 ft. of water outside the inlet. The area up by the Ferris wheel, which is always a late season hot spot for bass fishing every year has been giving up some 5 to 7 lb. fluke, and 6 yr. old Dave Baron got one over the rail at a little over 6 lbs, a great fish for a youngster to put up on the scale. The sea bass are thick on the wrecks and some 5 lb. and even bigger fish are coming in on some of the head boats, with the occasional mega-tog and a triggerfish or two in the mix. The ocean is supposed to get a little angry as this storm passes off shore for a few days but there are plenty of th...

(8/22/2010) “Steppin’ it up”- Fishing report-08-23-10-By Bob Misak This past weekend there was some good fishing going on as the Forked River Tuna Club started their one week fluke and bluefish tournament. Fred Imhoff fished outside with Billy Wong and they took two nice fluke off the bottom in 35 or 40 ft. of water at 5 lbs. 12 oz. and 4 lbs. 8 oz. The fish have been congregating off of Seaside and some bigger fish are starting to hit the scales, as expected in the last hurrah of the 2010 fluke season. I’m hearing talk that they’re going to “consider” loosening the noose on the fluke regs next season, but I guess we’ll just have to see. The sea bass are getting healthy out there and Fred and Bill also caught a 4.8 lb. humpback to supplement those flatties. The head boats out of Belmar and down here are pulling up some triggers off the wrecks, but I haven’t heard of too many inshore yet, and the spear fishing guys have told me that they’re thin out on the jetty. I hit the jetty on Sa...

“Fall’s-a-comin’
(8/20/2010 - by Bob Misak)
The past week of fishing out there was average for a mid-August week as the winds turned east again but were light enough that the wrecks outside gave up plenty of fat sea bass and some 6 to 8 lb. tog for a few lucky anglers on board. Nobody is belly-aching too much about the fluke fishing because most die-hards are putting fish in their freezers. As you sift through the shorts to get to that 18 inch fish you have to think, boy if all these little fish were big fish. The 60 to 70 ft. strip of water off Island Beach is where some keeper fish are coming from, and an occasional 6 to 8 lb. fish is winning pools on the head boats. This weekend begins the Forked River Tuna club’s one week fluke and bluefish tourney, ...

Dog Days
(8/15/2010 - by Bob Misak) “Dog Days”- Fishing report-08-15-10-By Bob Misak
The week went quite well with the inlet holding some decent fluke but the winds went east on Friday and I’ll tell you, it shut the fluking down a bit. The Lacey Elks held their annual fluke tourney on Saturday and the 1000 dollar winner took home the cash on a 3.8 lb. flattie. The weights were down a bit compared to past years, but that made the action an “anybody can win” game. As soon as we get to that shift back to west, or even south, things will get rolling again. Most boats couldn’t get out the inlet on Saturday so the two tournaments that were held were mostly in the inlet, and we couldn’t buy a decent fish. The guys who actually placed in the money ventured out side early, before the weather turned. I do understand that one boat did get on two really nice fish in front of the lighthouse to get in there and grab some digit. On a lighter note I have several reports of blowfish sneaking into the bay, and if you head out chumming o...

"Cuisin through summer"
(8/9/2010 - by By Bob Misak) This week saw plenty of action as guys got out there in the heat and mustered up some keeper fluke over by the sod banks and in front of the lighthouse as the fluke are still hiding in deep, cool water. The smaller fish are starting to stack up out in the inlet leaving the warm waters of the bay for greener pastures. This is a big weekend for tournament fishing as we have two great fluke tourney; the Lacey Elks extravaganza and the South Harbor Marine tourney for Oceans of Love, an organization to help those less fortunate than us. Basil and Nick have all the live baits you'll need to get out there and try your luck with those elusive doormats, and both captain's meetings are at the time, 6:30 Friday, so you'll have to send the mate over to get in both tourneys. The parties afterward are awesome with live entertainment and plenty of eats, so get in on the fun and make a day of it! The old barnacles at the 6th st. dock tell me that some nice triggers have been caught over there as well ...

“It’s a keepa”
(8/4/2010 - by Bob Misak)
This past week was a great one out there on the water with some really nice fluke coming in to the marinas and off the docks and jetties, as the flatties begin to move towards open water. There were a good number of keeper fish taken in the hotspot of the week, the area from Meyer’s Hole out towards the front of the lighthouse. I fished the 6th st. dock in Barnegat Light on Saturday and came home with three nice fluke from 19 to 22 inches, and I saw several boats drifting the inlet and netting some bruisers, and you can tell a fluke’s size by the amount of screaming and yelling on each boat. This area of the inlet has been on fire for three weeks now with Ray Frazier catching an 8 lb. fish off the dock weeks ago. I did notice, however that as I fished this weekend there were several more toss back fish than in recent weeks, with about 20 fish going back in. Again, I think this is due to the i...

(7/27/2010 - by By Bob Misak) This past week saw plenty of keeper fluke come to the fry pans both out of the bay and on the jetty. The guys over at the condo docks on sixth st. are still lighting it up and catching keeper fish everyday. (Three of those old dudes are a combined 245 yrs. of age) I fished with those guys on Tuesday and impressed even myself with two fish at 20 inches and a 19 to go. I also took some pics of some really nice fish to come off the docks this past two weeks and I saw my first triggerfish come to the surface right in front of me. You'll need some of Basil's fresh ground chum to get them to you, and I know Basil's chum is fresh because I went into the shop the other day and caught him eating some of it. Sometimes I worry about that dude. And with that we venture out to the end of the rock pile where the togs are thick and mean! I went out there twice since the season opened and caught nice fish within minutes, 17 inches and up. Most guys are passing on that because of the long haul out the...

“Nice tog you have there”-Fishing report-07-19-10-by Bob Misak
The tog season opened up on Friday and much to my surprise there wasn’t a soul out on the jetty rocks trying to get their one keeper. I fished out there on Saturday and the togs were thick, but it seemed that they would only eat on the incoming tide. This is really out of the normal scheme of things as we always fish on the outgoing, and my guess is that the incredibly warm bay temps were shutting them down. As soon as the tide switched and cooler water started to roll in, the fishing was on, and I took a 17 inch white chin home. An...

“Dang, its hot”
(7/7/2010 - by Bob Misak)
The fourth of July weekend was a decent one out on the water with the head boats loading guys up and taking them out to capitalize on the giant blues. Most big boats were traveling out about 20 miles to chum up some 15 to 18 lb. yellow eyes at night, and this was the thing to do and will continue to be the popular fishing, as it is a bit cooler out there as opposed to hitting the beach or melting yourself in the bay. This week was one of the hottest in quite a few years, and there really wasn’t too much participation out on the sands. My old friends Frank Marascia and Bob Massa fished the beach mid-week and started out with plans to find a left over bass or some blue fish schools, but ended up tossing bucktails around the sail boat mast on 10th st. The fluke are still littering the bottom of the surf, and there are very few keepers, but nobod...

“Pickin’ up”
(7/3/2010 - by Bob Misak)
This past week was hit or miss again for the fluke fishing outside and there was signs of more keeper fluke for those who hit it hard. The guys that are using small spots or other lively baits were getting the attention of the bigger flatties, and this is out in 65 to 70 ft. of water. The head boats are not only picking up some good sized pool winners, but more 18 to 20 inch fish are coming on board. This is not to say that the keeper rate in still a bit unacceptable in most folks eyes, but it is what it is, and we dealt with this very same scenario last season, but everyone worked through it. The bluefish are thick and huge outside with the bluefish guys just catching limits of fish up to and over 15 lbs. These are the yellow eyes that make blue fishing a blast, as long as you’re not fishing in bare feet. Most head boats are offering these half day gat...
